Runway 12/30 Extension Airports capable of supporting passenger air carrier operations are required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to have Runway Safety Areas. To preclude shortening the usable runway length to achieve the required safety areas, the Gary/Chicago International Airport is extending Runway 12/30 and associated taxiways to the northwest by approximately 1,900 feet.
Extending Runway 12/30 will require the phased construction of a 1,900 by 150-foot runway and parallel (75-foot wide) taxiway. Runway pavement will be 14-inch thick, jointed Portland Cement Concrete over crushed aggregate base course. Work under the Runway 12/30 Extension project also involves:
