Runway Expansion Program

Dynamic Compaction and Earthwork Stabilization

In conjunction with the Gary/Chicago International Airport - Runway 12/30 Runway Extension Program, railroad tracks owned by the EJ&E Railway, a subsidiary of the Canadian National Railroad, must be relocated from their current alignment to a new corridor.

The proposed railroad corridor will require construction of a new double track alignment, over an area of unconsolidated fill, on property commonly referred to as the "Roland Property."  To address the compaction and earthwork necessary to prepare the Roland Property to accommodate the relocated railway, the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority has established a contract titled, "EJ&E Railway Relocation Dynamic Compaction and Earthwork" (Project No. REP003).  The contract for EJ&E Railway Relocation Dynamic Compaction and Earthwork involves:

  • Borrow and Earth Excavation

  • Dynamic Compaction

  • Vibration Control and Monitoring

  • Prefabricated Vertical Drains

  • Erosion Control Measures

  • Other miscellaneous items related to this project
