The Gary/Chicago International Airport has experienced growth and significant improvements over the last decade. Fueled by a longer runway from which aircraft can take off and travel to any destination in the world, high-performing Fixed-Based Operators (FBOs) investing in the airport while providing world class services to the region’s aviation community, infrastructure and intermodal transportation capabilities giving airport users the ability to travel or transport goods to any part of the region quickly and efficiently, GCIA is well-positioned for the future.
An airport master plan is a study used to determine an airport’s short, medium, and long-term development needs. These needs are based on a forecast of aviation demand, which projects the airport’s anticipated activity over the course of the planning horizon. The airport master plan comprehensively studies an airport’s needs for general aviation, cargo, and commercial passenger activity. It provides recommendations for facilities, including the airfield, terminal, roadways, parking, and other support facilities. A plan is generally updated every five to ten years, and developed collaboratively between professional evaluations and public involvement. The ultimate goal of an airport master plan is to provide framework to guide future airport development that cost-effectively satisfies aviation demand, while considering environmental and socioeconomic impacts.
The last airport master plan update at Gary/Chicago International Airport was completed in 2001 and much has changed at the airport in the years since. This new study will help align the goals and objectives of the airport administration, airport operators, city of Gary, and other key stakeholders. This update will forecast aviation demand for the next 20 years. The airport master plan will outline opportunities to improve both airfield and terminal area facilities to meet the aviation and transportation needs of the Northern Indiana and greater Chicago region.
